Specialists in the industry shared their insights on what it takes to compliantly appraise environmentally friendly features. Learn the competencies and qualifications you need to successfully measure the benefits these features provide.

They discussed:

  • The use and application of the Appraisal Institutes’ (AI) Energy Efficient addendum.
  • Who is regulating the appraisal of green features?
  • How do you identify comps?
  • What is the value of ENERGY STAR® and Pearl Certifications?

Woody Fincham
President and Founder
Fincham and Associates, Inc.

Woody has earned two degrees: a degree in business administration and a degree in Culinary Arts. He is a dual-designated appraiser with the Appraisal Institute, the largest professional real estate appraiser organization in the United States. Woody also holds designations with the ASA, NAR, and RAC. He started his career in Hampton Roads, VA, working for a small fee practice that focused mostly on mortgage-use reports. In 2004, he co-founded and managed what became a very successful residential fee practice with a strong portfolio of lender and non-lender clients, FM & Associates, Inc. He sold his interest in his firm in 2008. He then moved into government assessment work, moving up quickly to executive-level management. He managed large staffs in all aspects of valuation, training, and appeals with the City of Suffolk, VA, and then to the County of Albemarle, VA. Woody was then promoted to work with the Virginia Department of Taxation to review and consult on Tax Credits related to conservation easement valuation. He took a position in the private sector in 2015 with a national appraisal form and soon became the Residential Chief Appraiser, where he managed a staff of appraisers of over 200 members in size. In 2019, he started a new valuation and consulting firm in Charlottesville, VA, with his son, a certified residential appraiser. Their firm specializes in sustainable residential dwellings, solar PV, large residential estates, conservation easements, mansions, complex assignments, litigation support, appraisal review, and some commercial-related work. The firm does some mortgage lending work as Woody is an approved appraiser for the FHA and VA panels. He lives with his family in Charlottesville, VA, but he frequently does work in almost every area of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Woody is also an approved instructor with the Appraisal Institute and an often-requested conference speaker.
