The Appraisal Foundation, a leading authority on the valuation profession, announced Nov. 1 that Jay Fishman and Elliott Adler were selected as the recipients of the Chairman’s Public Service Award, presented by the board of trustees’ immediate past chair, Steven Elliott.
The award was established in 2005 to recognize individuals who have worked with the Foundation for the benefit of the appraisal profession and who, in the process, have gone above and beyond the call of duty.
“Jay and Elliott have made outstanding contributions to The Appraisal Foundation and the valuation profession overall,” Elliott said. “The Foundation would not be where it is today without their ongoing commitment to our organization and their dedication to serving the public good. Jay has served on almost all of the Foundation’s boards over the past 13 years, and Elliott’s legal counsel and sage advice since the Foundation’s inception has enabled it to grow and become the lynchpin of the valuation profession that it is today.”
Fishman, a managing director of Financial Research Associates, has been actively engaged in the appraisal profession since 1974. He specializes in the valuation of business enterprises and their intangible assets. He has co-authored several books, including the highly acclaimed Guide to Business Valuations and Standards of Value. He also has written numerous articles on business valuations and has served as an expert witness and provided testimony in 12 states. Fishman is a former member of the board of trustees, a past member of the Appraisal Standards Board, and is currently vice chair of the Appraisal Practices Board of The Appraisal Foundation.
Adler is principal of Elliott Adler LLC Law Offices and has served as outside general counsel to The Appraisal Foundation since its inception. In his more than 35 years of practicing law, he has developed expertise in areas critical to his association, corporate and individual clients, providing legal advice and litigation representation on a range of disciplines. He has a national practice specializing in the areas of nonprofit, corporate, higher education and franchise law. He is a member of the National Roster of Neutrals of the American Arbitration Association and has acted as an arbitrator for commercial disputes.
The awards were presented at the fall meeting of The Appraisal Foundation’s board of trustees held Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 in Boca Raton, Fla.
